READING REPORT ‘Dig and Dump’
‘The dirty theorist follows the material, tracks, the soiled effluent, observing from where it came and the direction that it appears to be taking.’ (p. 6)
‘Dirty theory demands that other voices be heard’ (p. 8)
‘When theory gets dirty, then it begins to work with, from the midst of what you are doing, from the midst of the situation that is being analysed, designed, discussed.’ (p. 32)
‘In my dirty drawing Dig and Dump (2019) writes Hélène Frichot ‘I illustrate a simplistic relation between the resources we dig up, and the trash and we dump when we have exhausted the perceived use-value of the things that resources have been ingeniously moulded into. This is an ancient cycle, dig and dump, dig and dump, that has accelerated dangerously following the industrial revolution.’ (p. 20)
in Hélène Frichot, Dirty Theory: Troubling Architecture, (Baunach: Spurbuchverlag; AADR, 2019).

During our first action we “brought home” a small portion of top soil from Moeraske, to take care of and observe its development off site. So far new little plants keep appearing, spring is spring, even in a box… #soilsinresidence

PLENIÈRE
It happened during a meeting. One asked: what does Super Terram (the title of this research project) mean? The question was met with an array of answers… Latinophiles of the world, please get in touch! According to the dictionary Super Terram means ‘on land’ or ‘above-ground’. According to one of us, it could come to mean a venture towards the surface of the earth. As to answer to the question of who we are and what we do:
Super Terram focuses on the Brussels soils and the life that animates them. By placing these soils at the heart of citizen mobilizations, it aims to disclose new ways of conceiving our urban environment, more sensitive to the life and the relationships unfolding beneath our feet.

ISSUES OF REPRESENTATION « The depiction of soil profiles since the late 1700’s » article from Alfred E. Hartemink (2009) opened on page 122 showing a pen drawing of a podzol; personal notebook in the background.
As a graphic anthropologist — using drawing for ethnographic research — I was surprised to discover that soil science too grapples with issues of representation, a core notion in anthropology. Even more astonishing to me is the early curiosity shown by mainstream soil scientists for artistic renderings of soils (see for example Jenny 1968). Long before the 1990’s renewed interest for graphics in anthropology (drawings, comics, etc.), soil scientists were debating the potentialities of drawing and painting — over texts or photographs — for soil taxonomic purposes as well as to raise awareness about the aesthetic qualities of soils and the need to preserve them from degradation. On the other hand, anthropologists have a lot to say about making lively, non-objectifying representations. I believe there is room for a stimulating conversation between these two disciplines when it comes to inventing new representations of soils as living ecosystems.

Today was the last day of an Online Seminar organised at Faculté d’arhitecture ULB-La Cambre Horta called ‘SoilDephts’. All the conferences can be relistened to on a dedicated webpage. Click on any bag of soil to get access to an audio conference. The seminar served as an unofficial introduction to SuperTerram. One of the thins we learned during the week is how ‘unknown’ Urban Soils are in many ways cartographical, archeological, …
